Create Your Own Rainbow

Why not splash a little colour around as we edge out of winter?

Rainbows have come to mean so much to us lately. From the adoption of the rainbow flag symbolising the joyfulness of the Pride movement around the globe, to the hand-scribbled rainbows in the living room windows of grateful households, thanking our NHS for their faithful Covid service, the rainbow is the epitome of positivity. Lucky then, that I’m a self-confessed, life-long colour lover… Here’s how I’m creating rainbows right now!

In recent years, mid-February has been a hive of fashion activity for me, as bi-annual, London Fashion Week preparations roll around again, stressing me out and exhilarating me, in almost equal measure!

Clearly, there are one or two advantages to another virtual fashion month - it’s easier on the wallet (no travel or hotel costs) and it’s easier on the body (less physically exhausting, less hectic and less pain in my poor, stiletto-clad tootsies)!

But sadly, it’s just not the same… I miss the chance to push my own fashion and styling boundaries - to seek out, from my own wardrobe, or from my favourite designers, the 6 or 7 looks that will turn heads and lenses! I get such a rush from the creative energy that buzzes in the streets and on the catwalks. I love peacocking around, with my fashion family, wearing often ridiculous outfits that I’d never be brave enough to wear outside Fashion Week. Running from show to show, living on coffee and cake and taking in the best of the shows, FROWs and fashion moments may not be the healthiest, but it’s certainly the most fun 6 days of the preceding 6 months.

Spotlight on a Trend

So with all that in mind, I thought I'd challenge myself to style up at least one look that I would be wearing to LFW, if I were there in person this season. And here it is - I’m calling it: Create Your Own Rainbow!

For obvious reasons, I’m drawn, even more than usual, towards colour and frivolity in fashion right now. Although I love rainbow style anyway, it turns out that this is a seriously on-trend look! Everyone, from Ashish to Gucci and from Stella McCartney to Zimmerman, have been rocking rainbow looks on the runway - how thoroughly uplifting!

My look clearly starts (and it’s fair to say ends) with this fabulously bright and seriously cosy rainbow coat by James Lakeland. A one-off, it was a lucky find - I sum it up as “me, in a coat”! I have styled it with an otherwise monotonal lilac look, all from my own wardrobe. Clearly the coat has more than enough colour!

Much as I’d love to link it for you, as I said, it’s one of a kind, but don’t despair… scroll down for my pick of the season’s best rainbows, from high street to high end!
