Cloudy, with a chance of neon!

Styling Hi-Vis for All Seasons

There’s an old Scottish maxim that warns: “ne’er cast a clout ‘til May is oot”! For those not fluent in Scottishisms, this loosely translates as: “it’s too bloody cold ‘til the end of May to leave your coat, hat and scarf at home”!

With these images in the can for several weeks (could it be months?), I had thought the moment had passed to share them. Two things changed my mind… the weather as we edge towards the end of March (brrrr….) and the fact that, wherever I look, online or in store, this fabulous neon yellow-green just won’t quit.

So while I’m styling it here as a cosy, but eye-POPping contrast to these cool, winter greys, there’s no reason this colour can’t be a springboard for your summer style. In fact, at the end of last summer, I found a fabulous pair of Bottega Veneta trousers in this acidic hue, followed by matching, sparkly ‘Dorothy’ shoes (still available, see below). I’ve also snagged a summer maxi dress in the colour and a bow back mini dress (see below) from Warehouse.

When braving a neon, it’s a good idea to keep the rest of the palette neutral, unless you’re going top-to-toe with a column of colour (see Bottega Veneta shirt and trousers combo, below left).

Avoid black. It is too harsh with most brights and can deaden the look of pretty hues. To increase the versatility of these pieces, it can be useful to build up a capsule collection of alternative styling options, as shown below.
