It’s that in-between time of year - we’re all super-busy trying to catch up with family or far-flung friends who’ve returned for the festive season; hoping to make it to all the planned nights out and parties, while still retaining a little bit of time to relax on the sofa with your loved ones. But it’s also the time of the unplanned party - that impromptu invitation round to friends’ or out for dinner and drinks.

For these occasions, it’s great to have something smart, chic and impactful in your wardrobe that you can call on, at a moments notice and you know will always look good. To me, that’s a trouser suit, hand-down! If you have a dinner suit or ‘le smoking’ in your wardrobe, all the better, but if not, read on for the latest in chic suits and statement sleeves... which, by the way, won’t always work together!

This mix and match look from Zara sold out almost as soon as it hit the stores. Fear not, however! There are lots of statement-making options for you to shop below… it’s really all in the styling!

With shoulder frills that are echoed on the trouser hems, and that would surely put Dynasty’s Alexis Colby in the shade, this show-stopping blazer can be styled with a little black dress or, as above, the trousers can be paired with complementary statement-sleeved top. Thus, whether you’re heading out to a smart restaurant, round to friends to share some bubbly or you’re simply hitting up a few bars, feminine tailoring will see you through in style.

With shoulder details of this magnitude, keep the rest of your look simple. Either go without jewellery, or keep it tonal and funky, like this leather choker and tassel earrings.

The velvet bodice of this dramatic top is echoed in the black velvet of the bag. Understated, yet thoroughly considered. Black leather sandals or classic stilettos will keep the focus on the frill hem details, without competing for attention.

I hope this gives you some inspiration for those in-between parties… and don’t forget to ‘shop your own closet’! Have a peaceful and happy New Year!
