How to style a glamorous black look for winter

In association with Isabella’s Wardrobe, with special thanks to The Blythswood Hotel, Glasgow, and photographers John Murray and Sam Brewster.

It’s no secret that I’m a self-confessed colour-lover, but I’d be doing you, my faithful readers, a disservice if I didn’t explore the ‘dark side’ every now and then! Fashion is a fickle beast, this we know to be true, and while bright colours are set to be huge next season, we have to make it through winter in one piece first. Cue cosy, furry, highly wearable jackets, chic leather boots, and maybe a hint of silk underneath.

~ The Teddy Coat ~

Teddy coats have been around a looooong time, and they show no sign of quitting any time soon, not least because they’re the cosiest and most glamorous of all winter coat options - making them a win-win and a fashionista favourite. This luxurious black fur coat by Jin Ya Jia Yuan, is complete with hood and diamanté clasps and buttons, no less. If that weren’t enough, the key feature that this coat has over many, if not all alternatives, is that it has a concealed drawstring waist that allows you to cinch in and create a skirted silhouette when you want, or leave it boxy and loose when you’re styling it casual.

Diamanté clasp and buttons add luxe and sparkle to this already luxurious coat!

Underneath it all…

~ The Sheer Blouse ~

A black silk blouse is a wardrobe staple. It’s chic, versatile and just a tiny bit sexy… Perfect for pairing with a slinky skirt for date night or with jeans for casual drinks with the girls. This Ralph Lauren shirt is beautifully adorned with ruffle neck and cuff details, and a ruffle placate down the front. It comes complete with camisole for modesty - which is optional, of course! I styled the neckline with a vintage diamanté brooch (stylist’s own!) and very long diamanté tassel earrings (by Butler & Wilson) to bring light to my face.

Although I styled these pieces with shorts and over-the-knee boots to add drama, skinny black jeans or leather leggings would work equally well. Clearly, the hat is optional, and the diamanté pieces could be replaced with gold, silver or pearls.

Channelling My Inner Sally Bowles!

Are you in a style rut? Do you need a wardrobe detox, or just a friendly fashion chat?

Click below, I’d love to help you feel fabulous!

Despite being a fashion lover and stylist, I’m still amazed by the way in which clothes can elevate your mood and allow you to ‘be whoever you want’ at any particular moment! Here, with the addition of the hat, and with shorts and ‘principal boy-style’ over-the-knee boots, I seemed to transform into Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles in Cabaret (minus the sleek black bob)! I wasn’t deliberately going for that look, but the photos screamed out to me! What do you think?

Is black your go-to colour or do you prefer to stand out in bold brights? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for stopping by!

Much love,

Nx
